Like most Americans, my wife Jane and I got deep into debts during our 20s. Student loans, car loans, consumer debt, credit cards – I felt like we were up to our necks in debts. After 2 children and turning 30, we stopped the merry-go-round by budgeting and limiting our credit cards to when we traveled. For several years, we tread water, keeping up with the bills, but not getting ahead either.

We learned to live within our means by tithing to the Lord’s work, limiting our expenses, and stretching our dollars. Ron Blue’s books on Christian financial management were helpful. When we could, we paid extra on our credit cards and loans. We learned to plan ahead for unusual expenses. With the Lord’s help, careful money management, and a small inheritance, we were finally able to pay off all our debts at age 39.

Financial freedom was a tremendous feeling. A year later, in 2000, we were able to starting saving for a house down payment; we kept saving a little every month, watching the amount gradually increase. We’ve had to take out several used car loans since then, but have avoided other debts.

Over the years, I’ve listened to others share their financial struggles with me, and I tried to help them with sound advice. But I found few practical tools to share with them. When James Ray showed me Dave Ramsey’s Financial Peace University, I believed the Prince of Peace could use it to help numerous other individuals and couples. Please join me in praying that this class will give people HOPE to find the PEACE and FREEDOM that comes from financial responsibility.
